In Shame and Anger in Therapy, Dr. Leslie Greenberg uses emotion-focused therapy over the span of two separate sessions to guide a client toward processing deep-seated emotions.
Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is an empirically supported experiential treatment that views emotions as centrally important in the experience of self, in both adaptive and maladaptive functioning, and in therapeutic change. EFT involves a style that combines both following and guiding the client’s experiential process and emphasizes the importance of both relationship and intervention skills. It takes emotion as the fundamental datum of human experience while recognizing the importance of meaning-making, and ultimately views emotion and cognition as inextricably intertwined. In the two demonstrations in this video, Greenberg incorporates the two-chair method and other carefully timed interventions to help the client focus on confronting rather than avoiding their emotions. This process activates the adaptive potential of emotion to help change the client's problematic emotional states and begin to embrace a different experience of self.
This demonstration is bookended by a lively interview with the guest therapist conducted by host, Dr. Serine Warwar.
